Anesthesia – Relieve The Pain

Anesthesia – Relieve The Pain First of all let’s understand what anesthesia is and define its main purpose.

We are sure that most of you know that anesthesia helps to get rid of pain while the operation or when painful medical processes are on. In order to control unpleasant sensations various medications are used. Anesthesia is also used for purpose of various control of the patient’s condition: we mean breathing, pulse, heart beats.

So let’s look at the least of aims why doctors use anesthesia:

  • to control pain
  • to relax the patient
  • to make a patient steeped in slumber
  • to create the condition of unconsciousness.

Now we should differentiate between various kinds of anesthesia. There are three of them: blocking of nerve in the outlying areas, regional and local anesthesia.

We’ll begin with the blocking of nerve in the outlying areas. This kind of anesthesia is used to block a certain nerve (or some of them). This procedure stops pain in the area where this nerve is. It’s commonly used in the small areas like face, arms and legs.

As for regional type of anesthesia it can stop pain in all the body’s areas. It happens because the medicament is placed near main nerves of the spinal marrow. It is usually done in order to help the patient to relax or to make him sleepy. Regional anesthesia may be also of 2 kinds:

It can be epidural when the injection is made around the spinal marrow nerves. In this case pain will be blocked in many areas.

The second type is general anesthesia. It controls brain and all the body. Usually it’s injected intravenously or given in a droplet form. Due to general anesthesia a patient is unconsciousness and don’t know what happens around him.

And we present you a local anesthesia at last. It is used to block pain in a small area. The medication is injected into the area where operation will be performed. But local blocking is not used during serious medical procedures.

So, how the doctors choose the right kind of anesthesia? It may be connected with various factors like:

The condition of the patient’s health. We mean the presence or absence of previous operations or serious illnesses like problems with heart, lungs and so on. Possible allergies must be also taken into consideration.
Sure that choice of anesthesia’s type depends on the kind of operation you are to have.

And such tests as electrocardiogram and blood analysis also have some influence.

Sometimes the doctor allows his patient to choose the type of anesthesia (but only in case there are no health obstacles).
